Mapping Progress

Project geologists are mapping coal beds in a county or group of counties at a time. When completed, the statewide extent of each mapped coal bed will be available. At this time, coal beds in the counties shown in green have been mapped.

Mine compilations for all coal beds were updated in 2007 using maps current as of July 24, 2007.

Hyperlinks to Mine Maps

Now many mine maps can be accessed directly via a hyperlink on an apcard label when you do an inquiry on certain coverages or layers in IMS. The following layers have links to scanned mine map TIFF images:

  • Underground Mined Coal
  • Mined and Remaining Coal
  • Aperture Card Labels
  • Geological Discontinuities
  • Mining Extent Unknown

When you choose to make one of those layers visible ( checked square box) and then active ( checked round "radio" box), use the inquiry tool on your selected feature on the map. Information pertaining to your selection will appear below the map. On most browsers, the hyperlinked number will be a different color (blue) and underlined. Click on that number and a page will pop up giving you access to one or more maps associated with your selected feature.

Note that mine maps with aperture card labels in the 500xxx and 953xxx series are not available to the public.
